Berkshire CEO Plans to Hold Japanese Trading Companies Long-Term, AI Data Centers Present Energy Opportunities
Berkshire Hathaway CEO Greg Abel stated in an interview with CNBC that the company plans to hold its stakes in Japan's five major trading companies as a long-term investment, expecting to hold them for decades. Currently, Berkshire holds over 10% of shares in each trading company and is exploring collaboration opportunities in Japan and abroad with these firms. Despite Japan's 10-year government bond yield rising to about 3%, Abel believes that the five major trading companies do not view the increase in interest rates as a fundamental challenge, and Berkshire still plans to continue issuing yen-denominated bonds as appropriate. When discussing AI investments, Abel mentioned that the rapid development of artificial intelligence and the application of AI by Berkshire's subsidiaries are among the reasons for the company's optimism about Alphabet. He pointed out that the energy supply and infrastructure for AI data center construction are major constraints, presenting opportunities for Berkshire and Berkshire Energy. The company is willing to provide energy services for large tech companies' data centers but needs to ensure that it does not harm the interests of other customers and brings net benefits to local communities. Regarding the U.S. housing market, Abel believes that the "American Dream" will continue, but a rapid recovery is not expected in the short term, and the industry may face volatility in the future. Overall, most of Berkshire's large businesses performed strongly as of the second quarter, with demand remaining robust, but U.S. consumers are under pressure and need to be cautious with their disposable income, while the economic fundamentals remain "very strong."
