Bitcoin and Cryptocurrencies Wake Up: The Kospi Recovers
After the rain, comes the sunshine. Few markets have experienced a year as tumultuous as the South Korean stock market in 2026. The Kospi triggered its circuit breaker nine times since January, a first since the mechanism was established in 2000. The sidecar, a lighter safeguard that temporarily suspends programmed trading, was activated more than 40 times this year alone, exceeding the numbers during the 2008 financial crisis. The index had soared to a historic high of 9,385 points on June 19, driven by the euphoria surrounding Samsung and SK Hynix, before plunging 28% in just a few weeks due to a sharp deflation in semiconductor values. Key points of this article: * The South Korean stock market has had a tumultuous 2026, marked by the activation of nine circuit breakers, a record since 2000. * Trading volumes on South Korean crypto platforms have surged dramatically, with Upbit and Bithumb recording increases of 273% and 133% in just 24 hours. The Kospi: An Emotional Rollercoaster Since January Remember. On July 28, the index fell another 8% in a single session, triggering its eighth circuit breaker of the year. Two days later, it hit a low before embarking on a spectacular rebound of 18% in a single session, followed by a continuous rise of 22% between July 30 and August 13, bringing the Kospi back into bull market territory. Then came today. Friday, August 21. The index stood at 6,913 points, up 0.88%, buoyed by gains of 3.87% for Samsung and 2.31% for SK Hynix, boosted by announcements of shareholder returns: over 40 trillion won in stock buybacks at SK Hynix, and the announcement of a shareholder return program of 90 to 110 trillion won at Samsung, unprecedented for a Korean company. Amid this turmoil, Korean investors, largely equipped with leverage, have focused all their attention and money on semiconductors this year, at the expense of everything else, including crypto. The Forgotten Korean Crypto in the Kospi Rally The price paid by local crypto exchanges has been severe. The daily cumulative volume of the five main platforms in the country peaked at around $280 million on July 20, down 88% year-on-year, due to an entirely diverted focus towards the stock market. Upbit and Bithumb, the first and second exchanges in the country, saw their net profit plummet by 74% and turn negative in the first half. But today, the tide has turned for them as well. According to The Block, the trading volume on Upbit surged by 273% in 24 hours, reaching $1.84 billion, its highest level since mid-March. Bithumb follows with a 132.9% increase, reaching $934.9 million. XRP leads the trades on both platforms, ahead of Bitcoin, USDT, and Ether. This surge coincides with the rise in Bitcoin's price, which briefly surpassed $79,000. Regarding XRP, as CoinDesk noted back in May, South Korea remains one of the most active markets in the world for XRP. The token regularly tops local volumes whenever renewed interest emerges, often just before volatility truly accelerates. This Friday's movement follows a similar pattern. However, caution is advised. With the Kospi having already surged significantly this year while crypto lagged behind, Korean investors are likely seeking a "catch-up" rather than a completely new conviction.
