Bitcoin Core Vulnerability Cannot Disable Entire Network
Bitcoin Core has revealed a vulnerability that allows attackers to crash nodes on Windows, macOS, and BSD. A node is a computer that verifies transactions and blocks. The vulnerability, disclosed on October 28, shows that an attacker can cause a node's memory to overflow. However, not every Bitcoin computer is affected; Linux nodes are not vulnerable. The report describes a crash risk but does not indicate the possibility of stealing bitcoins or private keys. Versions 29.5, 30.4, 31.2, and 32.1 provide a fix. Although a crashed node stops functioning, other nodes remain active and can continue to verify transactions and blocks. Bitcoin does not have a central computer, meaning that if a group of nodes goes down, the remaining nodes can continue to support the network. The risk is not zero; a bug affecting many nodes can temporarily reduce the reliability of the network. The conclusion is that the claim is misleading; the bug can cause vulnerable nodes to crash but cannot disable the entire network.
