DeepSeek V4-Flash Analyzed at One-Seventh the Price of GPT-5.6 Luna
Chinese artificial intelligence companies are spreading low-cost open-weight models, shifting the global AI competition's focus towards cost and openness. DeepSeek introduced its V4-Pro model in April 2026, featuring a total of 1.6 trillion parameters and 49 billion active parameters. The V4-Flash has 284 billion total parameters and 13 billion active parameters, with both models supporting a context of 1 million tokens. According to the DeepSeek API, the price for 1 million input tokens of V4-Flash is $0.14, while the output token price is $0.28. In contrast, OpenAI's GPT-5.6 Luna charges $1 per million input tokens and $6 per output token, highlighting a significant price difference. Chinese companies are leveraging open-weight models as a means to attract overseas users, and U.S. companies are also considering Chinese models. Kai-Fu Lee stated that accessibility and modifiability are key criteria for model selection. OpenAI plans to release an open-weight inference model in August 2025. This competition is related to the decline in AI model costs, the spread of open-source infrastructure, and the demand for NVIDIA GPUs.
