Dollar Rebounds to Four-Week High, Inflation Data Strengthens Rate Hike Expectations
The dollar rebounded sharply on Wednesday, marking its largest gain in nearly four weeks. The market believes that U.S. inflation data remains elevated, further strengthening expectations that the Federal Reserve may raise interest rates before the end of the year. The Bloomberg Dollar Spot Index rose by as much as 0.3% before narrowing its gains. The strengthening dollar pushed U.S. Treasury yields higher, partially recovering losses incurred due to measures introduced by Treasury Secretary Scott Pelley to support the bond market. Data shows that the Personal Consumption Expenditures Price Index (PCE), which the Fed closely monitors, rose 3.7% year-on-year in July, nearly double the Fed's 2% inflation target, indicating that price pressures have not fully eased. The latest inflation data has reduced market expectations for rapid rate cuts and has renewed the likelihood of the Fed tightening monetary policy in the future. Recent dollar movements have been influenced by U.S. bond market policies, inflation trajectories, and changes in interest rate expectations.
