GoPro Merges with Starman Optical for $285 Million
GoPro announced a merger agreement with Starman Optical, a company specializing in optical transceivers, on September 1. Starman Optical will take 90% of the new entity and pay $285 million to GoPro shareholders, which amounts to approximately $1.14 per share. Shareholders will retain 10%, and the stock will remain listed on Nasdaq. This merger will also eliminate about $92 million in debt. CEO Nicholas Woodman stated that this move aims to expand GoPro into defense, aerospace, and AI markets. The merger is expected to be finalized by the end of 2026, pending approval from shareholders and regulators. The announcement led to a 40% increase in the stock price on the same day, following a 46% rise the day before. However, GoPro has seen its market value drop by nearly 90% over the past five years, with revenue of $105 million in Q2 2026, down 31% year-over-year. YouTuber Mark Fischbach, known as Markiplier, has become the largest individual shareholder of GoPro with 8.5% of the capital. This merger raises questions about GoPro's ability to recover and establish itself in the AI sector.
