Grayscale Launches Physical Contribution Applications for 10 Cryptocurrency Investment Products
Key Points of This Article
- Physical contributions for 10 cryptocurrency ETFs have begun
- Minimum investment amount starts from approximately $80,300
Launch of Physical Applications for Bitcoin ETFs and Others
On the 21st, Grayscale, a leading U.S. cryptocurrency asset manager, announced the launch of physical contribution (in-kind) applications for 10 types of cryptocurrency ETFs (Exchange-Traded Funds).
By utilizing this mechanism, qualifying investors can directly contribute their held cryptocurrencies and receive shares of Grayscale products in return. This could potentially eliminate the hassle and cost of converting to cash before purchasing ETFs and other products.
The products included are the "Bitcoin Mini Trust ETF" and "Ethereum Staking Mini ETF," as well as ETFs related to Avalanche (AVAX), Chainlink (LINK), Dogecoin (DOGE), Hyperliquid (HYPE), Solana (SOL), Sui (SUI), XRP, and Zcash (ZEC).
The minimum investment amount ranges from approximately $80,300 to $364,800 based on market prices as of October 20. This is an estimate and may change in the future. Steve Vanourny, head of Grayscale's index division, explained:
Amid increasing cybersecurity threats such as self-custody and attacks targeting DeFi (decentralized finance), the value of institutional custody is becoming increasingly important.
Investing in ETFs through physical contributions serves as a bridge between direct cryptocurrency ownership and traditional portfolio management.
Grayscale states that by turning these into investment products, they can also be utilized as collateral or margin, and can be incorporated into inheritance and asset succession frameworks, thus enhancing portfolio management flexibility. Maintaining exposure to the underlying assets is also highlighted as one of the attractions.
Based on SEC Approval in 2025
This move is believed to be backed by the approval from the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).
The SEC approved physical contributions and redemptions for cryptocurrency-related ETPs (including ETFs) in July 2025. This allowed designated participants such as major Wall Street firms and market makers to engage in such transactions.
Chairman Paul Atkins stated at the time, "This approval will lead to cost reductions and efficiencies for related products, benefiting investors."
When utilizing Grayscale's physical contribution applications, investors must go through designated participants or intermediaries acting on behalf of designated participants in the primary market. Intermediary fees may also apply.
