Lido Highlights Liquidity Buffers Impacting Ethereum ETP Yields
Lido emphasizes that staking allocation, fees, and liquidity management influence Ethereum exchange-traded product (ETP) rewards. In its October 23 institutional note, Lido points out that products with an unstaked liquidity buffer may earn rewards on less than their total ETH exposure. It cites WisdomTree's stETH-backed product as an example, indicating a commercial interest in this comparison. For instance, in a hypothetical product with 100 ETH, a 20 ETH unstaked buffer would leave 80 ETH generating staking rewards. If the staked portion earned 3% annually, it would yield 2.4 ETH before fees. A liquidity buffer can provide necessary liquidity during redemptions, but it raises questions about the operational benefits and potential rewards sacrificed. Ethereum's withdrawal process can delay exits for validators, affecting fund timelines. Liquid staking offers a market exit route through transferable claims on staked ETH, but selling requires buyers at acceptable prices. Market conditions can impact execution, especially under stress. Lido's note prompts a comprehensive examination of allocation, net reward sharing, liquidity arrangements, and market depth before comparing staking rates.
