Macron Criticizes Trump for Exploiting French Unrest for Midterm Election Gains
During his visit to Qatar, French President Emmanuel Macron publicly criticized foreign leaders, including Trump, for exploiting the recent violent unrest in France to attack immigrants and promote their own political agendas. Macron stated that there is no evidence of foreign interference inciting the unrest in France, but acknowledged that there has been foreign manipulation of information, leading to "unacceptable and foolish" comments from various leaders. He specifically pointed out that "Trump is among them" and mentioned some AI-generated images depicting scenes that never occurred in France. Macron also condemned those who are using the situation in certain areas of France or across the Atlantic to campaign for themselves, saying, "These people make me very angry." With only two weeks left until the U.S. midterm elections, Trump has repeatedly referenced the violent events in France, attempting to link them to immigration policies, warning American voters that "just look at France" and claiming that "Paris will soon become a Muslim city." These remarks connect the French unrest to the debate over immigration policy in the U.S., but French police have not definitively linked the unrest to immigration or Islamist extremists.
