Over 1,100 AI Professionals Petition for the U.S. to Slow Down AI Development
More than 1,100 employees from leading artificial intelligence companies have signed a petition urging the U.S. government to support the establishment of mechanisms to control the pace of AI development and prevent technological advancements from outpacing society. The petition has garnered signatures from employees at nearly a dozen companies, including OpenAI, Anthropic PBC, Google, and Meta Platforms Inc. It calls on the U.S. to support international efforts to set a pace for the development of more advanced AI systems, warning that the speed of AI development may exceed human understanding or control. Google has stated its commitment to developing AI in a safe and reliable manner for the benefit of society. The petition echoes the calls of several AI industry leaders, including OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and Google DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis, who advocate for the establishment of new international oversight bodies to review cutting-edge AI models and set standards.
