On August 23, U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand proposed that Congress should prohibit the president, the president's spouse, and senior officials from issuing or initiating cryptocurrencies or profiting from them during their terms, and to include this ban in the Digital Asset Market Structure Act. Surveys show that 63% of respondents believe that Trump and his family are improperly profiting from cryptocurrencies. Trump disclosed in his annual report that his cryptocurrency-related income exceeded $1.4 billion in 2025. The related controversy involves the Senate's Digital Asset Market Clarification Act, which is set for its first procedural vote on September 15. Gillibrand stated that she would not support allowing the president to profit from public office with taxpayer support.
