US Banks Push for Tokenized Deposit Payment Network
Large banks in the United States are expanding experiments with tokenized deposits that connect existing deposits and payment networks in a blockchain environment. On June 5, The Clearing House announced a bank-led on-chain money initiative in collaboration with 17 major financial institutions. This initiative aims to connect on-chain clearing and settlement of tokenized deposits between banks with existing payment networks. The TCH announcement did not mention stablecoins and focused on linking existing deposits and payment infrastructure to digital asset activities. Tokenized deposits are a digital method of recording and transferring bank deposits on the blockchain, which HSBC defined under a 1:1 token structure, private blockchain, and banking regulations. TCH stated that CHIPS shows a liquidity efficiency of 26 to 1 by 2025. CLS explained that it reduces the funding requirements in spot foreign exchange settlements by over 96%. The FDIC considers tokenized deposits to have the legal nature of deposits, stating that the nature of deposits remains unchanged even if the technical form changes. The BIS believes that stablecoins and tokenized deposits can coexist. The official TCH announcement did not include technology providers or specific operational timelines. The 17 banks also appear in SWIFT's blockchain ledger pilot, and both programs deal with tokenized deposits. The TCH initiative aims for automated workflows and 24/7 payment support.
