US Intelligence Warns of Escalating Iranian Assassination Plots, Calls for More Personnel Risk Notifications
On October 24, reports indicated that US intelligence agencies have observed a significant increase in Iranian actions targeting US diplomats and officials in the Middle East and other regions, with some deadly attack plots having reached advanced stages. US officials stated that this intelligence is one of the reasons for the reduction of personnel at multiple US embassies in the Middle East. National Intelligence Director Jay Clayton warned Secretary of State Rubio that intelligence regarding Iran's planned assassination operations needs to be communicated to more US government personnel who currently do not have access to this information. The memorandum did not specify particular attack targets or the countries involved, nor did it disclose the specific nature of the related plots, but it stated that the foundational intelligence has been shared with senior officials at the State Department. Clayton suggested lowering the classification level of the relevant sensitive intelligence so that Rubio can convey the information to more individuals who may be at risk.
