U.S. Restricts Tanker Navigation Through the Strait of Hormuz
The United States has mandated that tankers passing through the Strait of Hormuz can only navigate during specific time periods to ensure military protection. This move comes in response to Iran's increased attacks on vessels navigating at night. Since May, the U.S. has provided aerial defense to vessels wishing to travel along the southern route near the Omani coast to counter Iranian attacks and maintain some oil flow from the Gulf. Shipowners must coordinate with the U.S. Navy's Coordination Center (NCAGS) to obtain the coordinates they must follow, allowing them to navigate during a wider time window at night, during which they will be protected by U.S. aircraft. Around early September, the navigation periods were reduced to two specific time windows each day, and vessels must begin their journey at the designated times. The email mentioned that the recommended navigation times vary daily, and while vessels are not required to adhere to them, it is advised to do so. The email also noted that given the threats faced by commercial vessels, nighttime navigation is not the safest option.
