USDC Dominates 99.3% of x402 Payments
USDC has accounted for 99.3% of the x402 payment protocol. Circle announced that as of April 29, 2026, 99.8% of the transaction value on x402 is in USDC. According to the Q2 2026 performance data, 99.3% of the payment volume for x402 agents was settled in USDC. x402 is a payment protocol based on HTTP 402 Payment Required, publicly launched by Coinbase on May 6, 2025, designed for APIs and AI agents to automatically settle service fees using stablecoins. Coinbase stated in a payment blog on June 9, 2026, that x402 has processed over 160 million agent payments in the past year. The dominance of USDC goes beyond just being a payment token; it is intertwined with the base and Coinbase development tools, as well as Circle's agent stack. However, Coinbase announced on March 18, 2026, that x402 has been expanded to support nearly all ERC-20 tokens. The competitive landscape for stablecoins is shifting from issuance and exchange liquidity to AI agent payments, with wallet capabilities, settlement speed, and developer tools emerging as competitive factors. The independent tracker x402stats reported that as of August 23, 2026, the 30-day raw trading volume for x402 was $841,000. Industry reactions show both potential and barriers to real-world usage being identified simultaneously.
