Vitalik Buterin Expects Cybersecurity to Shift Towards Defense, but Transition Will Be Challenging
Vitalik Buterin stated that cybersecurity will ultimately lean towards a favorable defensive posture, but the transition will be very difficult. He pointed out that defense does not automatically lead the offense, and the notion that "good people discover vulnerabilities in released software earlier than bad actors" does not constitute a defensive advantage. To achieve a defensive edge, a deeper methodological shift is required, including formal verification and proactive minimization of the Trusted Computing Base (TCB), and these changes are just beginning. He emphasized that this distinction is a key reason he continues to support slowing down or pausing developments, and believes that investments in cybersecurity, biosecurity, and physical world fortification should exceed 1% of GDP.
