Wrench attack in Bristol: 16 and a half years in prison for 3 men targeting a private individual's cryptocurrencies
Wrench against cryptocurrency, English version. The webcomic xkcd summarized the problem back in 2009: why break encryption when you can just hit its owner? Three men attempted to apply this recipe in a Bristol home last May. They failed, and the British justice system has just sentenced them to a total of 16 and a half years in prison.
The scenario has become tragically familiar for French readers, with 41 crypto-kidnappings reported in France between January and mid-April 2026. However, the outcome of the Bristol case hinges on the intervention of a teenager.
Key Points
- A trio aged between 30 and 37 broke into a Bristol resident's home in the middle of the night to force him to hand over his cryptocurrencies.
- The alert raised by the victim's younger sister led to the immediate arrest of the attackers.
- Found guilty, they will serve between five and six years behind bars.
- Chainalysis recorded 46 physical assaults of this type worldwide between January and June 2026.
A thwarted nighttime wrench attack in Bristol
The scene unfolds in the early hours of May 15, 2026. Three men force their way into a Bristol residence in the southwest of England and confront its occupant. They demand that he transfer a large sum in cryptocurrencies. The victim receives a blow to the head, and the injury will require hospital treatment.
The plan quickly derails. The teenage sister of the victim manages to alert the police, who apprehend the three intruders on site. No transfer took place.
The term comes directly from xkcd: the "wrench attack" consists of physically forcing a holder to empty their wallet rather than hacking their keys.
Sentences of five to six years for aggravated burglary
The three men pleaded guilty to aggravated burglary at the August hearing. English law reserves this classification for intrusions committed with a weapon or similar object.
The Bristol Crown Court set the sentences on October 15. Terroll Paul, 31, received six years in prison. Pierre Madzou, 30, got five and a half years. Mohamed Samagassi, 37, was sentenced to five years. The Avon and Somerset police statement specifies that Paul and Madzou reside in Barking, east London. Samagassi has no fixed address.
Read at the hearing, the victim's statement describes a transformed man. Once jovial and talkative, he now says he is "constantly scared" and always on guard. Gemma Childs, the officer in charge of the case, praises the composure of the young girl. Her call allowed for the arrest and spared her brother from further violence.
Wrench attacks in the UK and France in 2026
English courts are handling this type of case in succession. Three teenagers from Sheffield received a total of 16 years of detention in February 2026. Disguised as delivery drivers, they had stolen the equivalent of 4.3 million dollars in cryptocurrencies from a resident of the London neighborhood of Hoxton in June 2024. In May, four men were sentenced to prison terms of up to six and a half years for abducting a City employee after a night out in Shoreditch in July 2025. It was Coinbase that raised the alarm.
Chainalysis recorded 46 physical attacks against cryptocurrency holders worldwide in the first half of 2026, compared to 40 a year earlier. The loot exceeds 30 million dollars. However, only 26% of these assaults resulted in a payment, down from 49% in 2025. The Bristol trio adds to the column of failures.
France remains the European epicenter. The same report counts 30 public incidents by mid-year, more than in all of 2025 (19). In July, Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez mentioned 77 kidnappings, extortions, or attempts, compared to 45 the previous year. Chainalysis links part of this surge to data leaks, including the alleged sale of tax information by a public agent.
Major platforms have taken the initiative, with Coinbase and Gemini spending millions on the security of their executives. Chainalysis estimates that the 2025 record of 58 million dollars extorted could fall by December.
