Firmus Signs OpenAI for Malaysia AI Compute Buildout

- The main variable to watch is delivery. Firmus said its total contracted computing capacity now exceeds 900 megawatts, but only two of its seven AI factories are already operating, with five still under construction and scheduled for commissioning over the next 24 months.
- Hardware deployment is another key checkpoint. The Malaysia facilities are set to use NVIDIA's Vera Rubin NVL72 system, the NVIDIA DSX AI Factory platform, and Firmus's HyperCube liquid cooling infrastructure, making execution dependent on successful integration of multiple infrastructure layers.
- OpenAI's role as an anchor client gives the project stronger commercial signaling than a standard infrastructure announcement. The market will be watching whether this arrangement leads to broader regional AI capacity commitments in Asia-Pacific.
Firmus said it has entered a multi-year strategic partnership with OpenAI, which will supply dedicated AI computing demand for two Firmus AI factories in Malaysia and act as the anchor client for the sites.
According to Firmus, the partnership covers dedicated AI computing power for two AI factories in Malaysia. OpenAI said the new data center in Malaysia is intended to help meet rising product demand in the Asia-Pacific region and globally.
Firmus said the agreement lifts its total contracted computing capacity to more than 900 megawatts. The company also said it operates seven AI factories across Australia, Singapore, Indonesia, and Malaysia.
Of those seven sites, Firmus said two are already in operation and five are under construction. The five projects are expected to be commissioned over the next 24 months, according to the company.
For the Malaysia deployment, Firmus said the relevant AI factories will use NVIDIA's Vera Rubin NVL72 system and the NVIDIA DSX AI Factory platform, alongside the company's in-house HyperCube liquid cooling infrastructure. The announcement did not disclose financial terms or provide a more detailed rollout schedule for the OpenAI capacity.
Why It Matters
The announcement points to continued competition to secure large-scale AI compute infrastructure in Asia, with Malaysia positioned as part of a broader regional buildout rather than only a local data center market. OpenAI's involvement also underscores how AI model providers are looking beyond the U.S. for additional capacity as demand for inference and training infrastructure grows.
For digital-asset markets, the relevance is indirect but notable: large AI infrastructure deals increasingly shape demand for advanced chips, power, cooling, and data center capacity, all of which are becoming important themes across adjacent AI and compute-related sectors.
