Block Releases Dialogue Model Dessa, Capable of Running Locally on MacBook
Block has released a research preview of its full-duplex voice dialogue model, Dessa. This model is trained from scratch on human conversational speech without using text or pre-trained models, enabling it to listen and speak simultaneously. The training utilized a set of NVIDIA GB200 NVL72, allowing it to run locally on MacBook Pro M4 Max or higher configurations at speeds faster than real-time. Currently, Dessa is not fully open to the public, but the official has released a dialogue demonstration recording and provided early access to a limited number of AI safety researchers. Project lead Ragavan Thurairatnam describes it as a GPT-3 moment in the field of voice technology.
