Chips, AI and Bitcoin: Reading Cross-Market Risk Appetite After a Volatile Week
TL;DR
- What happened: TSMC reported a record quarterly profit on October 15, yet its shares fell around the release. Asian chip shares rebounded on October 16, but Korea and Japan still ended the week lower.
- Why it matters to crypto readers: Interest-rate worries and doubts about AI spending are shared drivers of risk appetite. Bitcoin is often compared with equities on days like these.
- A framework: Ask three questions. Is the move shared? What is the common driver? Is the timing aligned?
- Not a forecast: This article gives no price levels or direction calls.

Why a record profit did not settle the debate
Reading cross-market risk appetite: three questions
- Is the move shared? Compare Bitcoin with a chip-heavy equity index over the same window. A move that appears in both points toward a common driver. If Bitcoin diverges, look for crypto-specific factors such as flows, positioning or regulation.
- What is the common driver? This week there are two candidates: expectations for interest rates after the inflation prints, and doubts about the financing behind AI infrastructure. Naming the driver before reading the chart keeps the analysis honest.
- Is the timing aligned? Crypto trades around the clock, while equity markets have fixed sessions. The cash sessions in Tokyo and Seoul run roughly from 00:00 to 06:30 UTC, and Taipei roughly from 01:00 to 05:30 UTC. A headline that lands during those hours can show up in crypto before other equity markets open. A scheduled release such as 12:30 UTC reaches every market at the same moment.
What to monitor next
- Rate decision: The Federal Reserve's next policy statement is scheduled for October 28 at 2:00 p.m. ET, which is 18:00 UTC.
- Earnings season: Further results from companies in the AI supply chain, checked against each company's own calendar.
- Crypto positioning: Funding rates, open interest and liquidation data show how crowded leveraged positions are. Leveraged positions can be liquidated quickly in fast markets.
