Crypto Exchange Security in 2026: How to Verify WEEX Reserves and Protection Fund

By: WEEX|10/22/2026 02:15:00

TL;DR

  • Crypto security goes beyond reserves: Q3 2026 saw approximately $1.26B in crypto security losses, according to CertiK. Proof of Reserves helps verify asset coverage but cannot prevent hacks or scams.
  • Verify WEEX yourself: Use the WEEX Trust Center to check Proof of Reserves, verify the 1,000 BTC Protection Fund on-chain, and confirm official WEEX contacts.
  • 5 checks before you deposit: Review reserve transparency, balance verification, protection fund holdings, coverage terms, and official contact verification to better assess exchange security.

In crypto, trust shouldn't be a promise. It should be something you can verify.
With crypto hacks, social engineering attacks, and deepfake scams raising security concerns, choosing a crypto exchange takes more than checking its reputation. Traders need transparency, verifiable asset reserves, and reliable ways to identify official communication channels.
That's where the WEEX Trust Center comes in. It brings together Proof of Reserves, a publicly verifiable 1,000 BTC Protection Fund, and official contact verification tools—all designed to help users independently assess key aspects of exchange security.
But what can these safeguards actually prove, and where are their limits? This guide walks you through how to verify WEEX security information step by step, plus five essential checks every trader should make before depositing funds.

What Is Proof of Reserves, and Does It Protect Your Crypto?

No. Many traders read a reserve ratio above 100% as a sign their funds are safe from anything, but the data says otherwise.
Proof of reserves provides evidence of asset coverage at a specific point in time, but it does not independently establish the absence of undisclosed liabilities, lending arrangements, or future security risks. It does not tell you what happens after the snapshot is taken. CoinGecko's 2026 State of Crypto Security Report makes the same point directly: reserve proofs and similar safeguards do little against social engineering or a serious failure in private key security.
Proof of reserves tells you whether an exchange is holding your funds. A protection fund speaks to what happens if someone steals them. A platform you trust should give you evidence of both, and you should be able to check each one yourself.

How to Verify WEEX Proof of Reserves Step by Step

You can do it at two levels, depending on how much time you want to spend.
The two-minute check. Open the Reserve snapshot on the WEEX Trust Center. WEEX calculates the reserve ratio as platform reserves divided by user holdings, so a ratio of 100% or more means supported user assets are fully covered. Here is the latest snapshot:

When you read it, focus on three things:
  • The date and block height. These tell you how old the snapshot is. A ratio from months ago says little about today.
  • Each asset separately. A healthy total ratio can sit alongside a thin ratio in one coin. If you mainly hold USDT, the USDT figure is the one that matters to you.
  • The cross-check. The Trust Center links to WEEX's reserve data on CoinMarketCap, so you can compare the figures against a second source.
The full check. WEEX publishes an open-source verification tool on GitHub. According to its instructions, you need Java 11 or later, at least 4GB of memory, and to be logged in to your WEEX account. The process runs like this:
  1. Download the verification tool from the repository.
  2. Download your own user balance data and the platform balance data from WEEX.
  3. Create a folder named after the asset you want to check (for example, BTC), add a metadata file with the published metadata, and place the data files inside.
  4. Compile and run the tool, then review the result.
This takes some technical comfort, and most traders won't run it. That's fine. What matters is that anyone can recompute the result from raw data instead of relying on a number displayed on a web page. A published figure that no one outside the company can check is a much weaker claim.

How to Verify WEEX's 1,000 BTC Protection Fund On-Chain

Look up the fund's wallet in a block explorer. WEEX lists the address publicly, and it is viewable on Blockchair. Three things are worth checking:
  • The current balance, compared against the 1,000 BTC WEEX states.
  • The transaction history, to see whether and when funds have moved out of the address.
  • The address itself. Copy it from the Trust Center rather than from a message or a third-party post. Scammers build look-alike pages, and an address you didn't get from the official site proves nothing.
Holding the fund in BTC, at a public address, means its balance can be confirmed at any time by anyone, without a request to WEEX.
Know what the fund does and doesn't cover before you rely on it. WEEX states on the Trust Center that coverage is subject to the applicable terms, eligibility requirements, and exclusions. The WEEX Protection Fund page spells out the main ones: the fund addresses losses that occur through no fault of the user, trading losses are not covered, and neither are cases where a user is tricked into authorizing a transaction or mistakenly approves one.

How to Spot Fake WEEX Support and Verify Official Contacts

Check any contact you didn't initiate against WEEX's official list before you reply. For many traders, a fake support agent is a bigger practical risk than an exchange hack, because the attacker never has to break into anything. The user authorizes the transfer, and as noted above, a transaction a user was tricked into approving falls outside the WEEX Protection Fund's coverage. That makes the check before you act more important than anything you can do afterward.
This kind of fraud is growing fast. TRM Labs reports that deepfake-scam losses reported in early 2026 had already exceeded the full-year 2025 total by 263%. The same research found deepfake tools sold as a service, with a single face-swap and voice-cloning model priced around $500. A convincing video call from "support" no longer takes a skilled team.
To verify a contact with WEEX's tool:
  1. Go to the WEEX Contact Verifier by typing the address yourself. Don't use a link inside the message you're checking.
  2. Enter the account handle, website, email address, or other contact detail you received.
  3. If it doesn't appear as official, treat it as fake and don't engage.

5 Crypto Exchange Security Checks Before You Deposit

These questions apply to any platform, including WEEX:
  1. When was the last proof of reserves snapshot, and how often is it updated? An old snapshot is a weak signal.
  2. Can you confirm your own balance is included? A published total is less meaningful if you can't verify that your account is part of it.
  3. Is there a separate protection fund, and is its address public? A fund you can't see on-chain is a promise, not evidence.
  4. Are the fund's coverage terms published? Size matters less if you don't know what it pays for.
  5. Is there an official way to verify contacts and links? Most user losses don't involve the exchange being hacked at all.
One signal to treat with caution is a security audit badge. CoinGecko's 2026 State of Crypto Security Report found that 147 of the 245 exploited platforms in its study, about 60%, had completed independent security reviews before they were compromised. An audit checks the code that was in scope. It says much less about credentials, third-party vendors, and key management, and the same report found infrastructure and supply-chain failures to be the costliest category of attack, at more than $1.8 billion between January 2025 and July 2026.
No exchange can promise a breach will never happen. What you can reasonably expect is evidence you are able to check for yourself.
The WEEX Trust Center brings WEEX's proof of reserves, the 1,000 BTC Protection Fund, security practices, and the official Contact Verifier together on one page. Review the evidence on the WEEX Trust Center.
