CNN Fear and Greed Index Falls to 18 Points
The CNN Fear and Greed Index has dropped from 47 to 18 points, indicating "Extreme Fear" in the stock market. This sharp deterioration in sentiment has led to panic among investors, who have begun to reduce positions in volatile assets. Investment consultant Kurt Altrichter noted that the two previous declines of the index below 25 last year coincided with market bottoms in stocks. The index assesses the mood of stock market participants on a scale from 0 to 100, where values below 25 signal fear. The transition from a neutral state to panic occurred in just a few days. The index chart shows two previous declines in October 2025 and April 2026, after which the stock market recovered. Intense fear in the market can serve as a contrarian signal, as a significant portion of sellers have already exited their positions, easing pressure on the market. For the cryptocurrency market, the dynamics of the index are also important, as Bitcoin and other crypto assets often move in tandem with stocks. Extreme fear in the stock market may increase pressure on crypto assets, but if stocks begin to recover, it could support Bitcoin.
