Coppock Curve and Crypto Trading: How to Use the Trend Reversal Indicator
Modern crypto trading is usually built on technical analysis tools developed by traders, analysts, or economists. The Coppock Curve stands out from this group: the indicator was created at the request of a church organization and was designed for long-term investors who needed to understand when a prolonged market decline was coming to an end.
What the Coppock Curve Shows
The Coppock Curve is classified as a momentum indicator. Its main purpose is to help determine the moment when a trend may reverse. In its original version, the tool was used solely to find market bottoms, that is, the moment when the decline in an asset's price is close to finishing. Later, traders began to apply it in the opposite situation—as a guide to the possible end of an upward movement.
The indicator was created by economist Edwin Coppock, founder of the analytical company Trendex Research. In the 1960s, he presented the development in Barron's magazine. The initiator of the tool's creation was the Episcopal Church—one of the prominent Protestant denominations in the USA. The church needed a clear guide for capital protection during long-term investments.
How the Indicator is Calculated
The Coppock Curve is based on a ten-month weighted moving average of the sum of two rates of change in price: over 14 and 11 months. These periods were chosen deliberately. According to Episcopal clergy, after significant shocks, a person typically experiences a state of grief for about 11-14 months. Coppock transferred this idea to financial markets and used it in the formula of the indicator.
Coppock Curve = WMA10 (RoC14 + RoC11)
Here, WMA10 is the weighted moving average for 10 months, while RoC14 and RoC11 are the rates of change in price over 14 and 11 months, respectively.
In practice, calculating the curve manually is rarely necessary. Modern trading platforms build the indicator automatically.
What Signals the Coppock Curve Gives
The indicator essentially has one key signal—the crossing of the zero line. In the classical approach, movement from below to above was considered important: it indicated a possible end to the bearish trend. Over time, traders began to consider the opposite crossing—from above to below—as a sign of weakening in the bullish market.
On the monthly chart of Bitcoin on the Bitstamp exchange, the Coppock Curve does not provide frequent signals. The last crossing of the zero level from below occurred in September 2023. After that, the indicator remained above zero for 32 months and only entered the negative zone in May 2026.
If, in such a situation, the trading strategy relied solely on this indicator, the account could have increased by almost 2.7 times. In practice, the result would be slightly lower due to commissions. However, the signal turned out to be imperfect: at one point, the price was 72.6% higher than the level at which the Coppock Curve then fell below zero.
An example with Ethereum shows the limitations of the tool even more clearly. On the monthly chart of ETH, the Coppock Curve remained above the zero mark from September 2025 to April 2026, but during this time, the price of the second-largest cryptocurrency by market capitalization fell by more than 45%. This result confirms that using a single indicator without confirmation from other analysis methods is risky.
Initially, Edwin Coppock created his tool for monthly charts. However, in practice, traders use it on shorter timeframes as well. Whether this is justified depends on the specific trading system.

Strengths and Weaknesses of the Indicator
Like any technical analysis tool, the Coppock Curve is not useful in all market conditions. Its advantages and limitations are particularly noticeable when comparing long-term investing and short-term speculative trading.
- The main disadvantage is lag. In its classic version, the indicator is based on monthly data, so it cannot react to the market instantly.
- The Coppock Curve is more suitable for long-term strategies. For short-term traders and active speculators, its signals may be too rare and late.
- The indicator is primarily designed to find reversals after declines. However, markets, including the cryptocurrency market, spend a significant portion of their time—up to 80%—in consolidation, so there are not many suitable situations for applying the curve.
- During market shocks, such as an instant crash, the indicator may give false signals.
- The Coppock Curve is better used in conjunction with other analysis tools. Trading based solely on one signal can lead to significant losses.
The advantages of the indicator include its simplicity. It does not require daily monitoring, and the signal of crossing the zero line is easy to interpret and difficult to misinterpret.
Conclusion
The Coppock Curve is a simple and visual technical analysis tool for long-term trading. Its main function is to find the moment when a bearish trend may end. However, lag, rare signals, and the risk of errors during unstable periods make this indicator only a part of a trading system, not a standalone basis for decision-making.
