Ethereum prototype reduces blob-recovery computing work by 11-18×
An Ethereum prototype that distributes blob-recovery tasks among nodes achieved an 11-18× reduction in estimated reconstruction computing work in 1,000-node simulations. This suggests operators could minimize duplicated work with a simpler adjustment than the full RowDAS networking proposal. Researcher Csaba Kiraly's report from Sept. 3 outlines this reduced design as a potential initial step toward RowDAS, assigning recovery duties without the new row-networking channels proposed in the full plan. Blobs contain data for layer-2 rollups, and Ethereum's PeerDAS system allows nodes to download only portions of this data. High-custody nodes hold at least 64 of the 128 data columns necessary for reconstructing missing blob data, while supernodes hold all 128. The reduced design prioritizes certain blobs for high-custody nodes, enabling others to receive recovered data without immediate reconstruction. In one simulation with four blobs and 10% supernodes, the estimated network-wide reconstruction cost dropped from 48.6 CPU-seconds under the PeerDAS model to 2.75 CPU-seconds with the reduced design. With a 20% supernode share, the costs were 91 and 6.6 CPU-seconds, respectively. These figures reflect accumulated computing work rather than elapsed recovery time, based on a measured 162-millisecond cost per blob recovery on a Ryzen 9 8945HS processor. The reduced design allows assigned nodes to share recovered cells through existing channels while maintaining a delayed recovery role for high-custody nodes. Full RowDAS, outlined in draft EIP-8371, would introduce additional recovery routes but the current design relies on high-custody nodes. The results are based on simulated networks, with larger simulations and real-network tests pending.
