EU Does Not Discuss New Funding Mechanisms for Ukraine, €90 Billion Loan Remains in Effect
The European Union is not considering accelerating Ukraine's payments on the €90 billion loan, which is set to be disbursed over two years as planned. New funding mechanisms are not being discussed, despite the increasing defense needs of Ukraine. The chief spokesperson of the European Commission, Paola Pinho, confirmed at a briefing in Brussels that the EU continues to make payments under the loan, which is expected to cover two-thirds of Ukraine's budgetary and military needs. Pinho noted that the plan for distributing funds is "extremely ambitious." "We have €45 billion for this year and €45 billion for next year. We are moving in the right direction and will continue to do so," she emphasized. She also reminded that the payments are linked to the reforms being implemented in Ukraine, which is a "critically important aspect." On August 24, the European Commission announced a new defense support package for Ukraine worth €6.1 billion, which includes funding for air and missile defense systems.
