Google Cloud Hires OpenAI Engineer Ryan Lopopolo to Lead Agent Workflows

By: rootdata|2026/07/09 11:47:51

Former OpenAI engineer Ryan Lopopolo has joined Google Cloud as the Chief Engineer for Agentic Google Cloud Platform. Lopopolo is the author of OpenAI's article "Harness Engineering," which emphasizes providing agents with context, tools, permissions, evaluations, and feedback loops to facilitate their involvement in software development. He participated in an internal experiment where the team used Codex to develop products from scratch, generating approximately one million lines of code over five months, covering code, testing, CI, documentation, and internal tools, with humans primarily responsible for goals and acceptance. This move indicates that Google Cloud aims not only to sell models and computing power but also to enhance the engineering capabilities of enterprise agents.
