Hardware Wallets Do Not Provide Unbreakable Security for Crypto
A hardware wallet increases the security of crypto by storing secret keys on a separate device, disconnected from the internet. This reduces the risk of theft via online wallets, but does not guarantee complete protection. Hardware wallets, also known as 'cold storage', sign transactions on the device, making it difficult for malware to access the keys. However, the wallet itself can be vulnerable. Earlier, Coldcard Mk3 wallets were affected by a software bug that led to the theft of 594.48 bitcoin. Additionally, Trezor owners received phishing emails that tricked them into entering their recovery phrase, giving attackers full access. A hardware wallet does not protect against signing malicious transactions, loss of the recovery phrase, or physical coercion. Conclusion: a hardware wallet is secure, but not an impenetrable vault.
