HSBC Launches Hong Kong Dollar Stablecoin RedCoin on PayMe, Expanding to Over 3.3 Million Users and 100,000 Merchants
Service Provision on PayMe Backed by a Huge Customer Base
HSBC Holdings, the mega bank, has officially launched the operation of a new regulatory-compliant stablecoin, RedCoin (ticker symbol: RCHKD), which is pegged to the Hong Kong dollar.
The wallet function within the mobile payment platform "PayMe" provided by the bank will be gradually rolled out, reaching general users within a few days. This marks a significant step as a digital currency project led by a major financial institution, distinguishing itself from traditional cryptocurrencies and aiming for expansion from retail payments to investment uses.
With this initiative, over 3.3 million users registered on PayMe and a network of more than 100,000 merchants will gain a new digital payment option. Users can activate the stablecoin wallet within the app to enable instant peer-to-peer transfers and in-store shopping payments.
RedCoin is designed to maintain its value at a 1:1 ratio with the Hong Kong dollar, with the backing reserves strictly segregated. The asset custody and management system is based on HSBC's digital asset custody framework, ensuring robust compliance measures are in place.
Uniqueness Brought by Regulatory Compliance and Private Infrastructure
Based on the regulatory framework for stablecoins introduced by the HKMA (Hong Kong Monetary Authority), HSBC has launched this project as a licensed operator.
Unlike existing cryptocurrencies such as USDT and USDC, which circulate widely on public blockchains, RedCoin operates on a private ledger managed by HSBC.
Currently, there are no plans for external transfers to self-managed wallets or listings on cryptocurrency exchanges, focusing instead on a closed environment led by the bank. This ensures high security and regulatory compliance, while a cautious approach is taken regarding interoperability with other decentralized networks.
Focus on Actual Adoption and Market Impact
The announced figure of 3.3 million users refers to the total registered customers of PayMe, and not all users will launch their wallets and start holding from day one. The scale at the start of circulation is limited to approximately $10.2 million (about 1.6 billion yen), and the actual usage frequency and the speed of increase in active wallets will be key to its adoption.
Compared to major stablecoins with high liquidity on public chains, it is necessary to assess how much convenience and cost benefits this token, with its limited usage scope, can provide based on future operational performance.
Future Prospects from Payment Domain to Financial Products and Corporate Services
HSBC's strategy does not stop at individual payment solutions for daily shopping and remittances. By the end of the year, it plans to implement RedCoin functionality in its mobile banking app for Hong Kong, expanding its use as a means to purchase tokenized MMFs (money market funds) and other investment products.
Furthermore, there are plans to apply this to business processes for corporate clients and institutional investors, advancing the construction of next-generation infrastructure that combines traditional financial services with decentralized technology.
