Kupferman Predicts U.S. Recession Next Year, Warns Inflation Risks Impacting Stock Valuations
Billionaire investor Leon Kupferman has warned that the U.S. economy may fall into recession within the next year, dragging down the stock market. He pointed out that the current market resembles the crashes of the 1970s and expressed concerns about the cooling of optimism surrounding AI. In an interview with CNBC, Kupferman stated that he expects a recession to occur sometime next year, which could lead to a market decline. He believes that the market has an overly optimistic expectation for S&P 500 earnings growth, with current expectations exceeding 50%. Kupferman diverges from the mainstream bullish views on Wall Street, particularly avoiding tech stocks, and holds a negative outlook on the overall market. He cautioned investors about the risk of inflation rebounding, noting that Brent crude oil prices remain high (around $90 per barrel) and that retail sales fell 0.6% month-over-month in July. Higher inflation could hurt stock valuations, similar to the significant drop in growth stocks following the oil price surge in the 1970s. He indicated that the current market is generally bullish, but if negative catalysts arise, investors may quickly sell off. Meanwhile, the yield on the U.S. 30-year Treasury bond briefly reached 5.33%, the highest since 2007, with analysts warning that if yields rise towards 6%, the stock market could face further pressure.
