Citadel Considers Acquisition of U.S. Shale Oil Assets
Citadel is considering the acquisition of U.S. shale oil production assets. This indicates a shift in the energy trading focus towards physical production. Recently, Citadel has reportedly been in contact with private equity firms that hold a significant stake in U.S. exploration and production companies. Citadel was one of the bidders for Wildfire Energy, but the final acquirer turned out to be Magnolia Oil & Gas. Magnolia Oil & Gas has signed a contract to acquire Wildfire for approximately $4.06 billion. This asset produces about 53,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day and includes a 70% oil composition. The deal structure consists of $2.65 billion in cash along with stock and bond acquisitions. Magnolia Oil & Gas expects the transaction to close by the end of the third quarter of 2026. Citadel operates in various commodity markets, including natural gas, electricity, and crude oil, and this review of oil assets is interpreted as an extension of its existing gas business expansion. Discussions regarding Citadel's oil asset acquisition are currently in the negotiation phase.
