Hegotá Censorship Resistance Confirmed, Slot Shortening Under Review

Ethereum's (ETH) target upgrade for 2027, Hegotá, has confirmed the enhancement of censorship resistance as a key focus. Slot shortening and account abstraction are under preliminary review, but the final scope and implementation methods are still in the adjustment phase.

Ethlabs presented its views on Hegotá in a statement released on August 14, outlining the priorities for the upcoming upgrade as △FOCIL △Quick Slots △Native Account Abstraction △L1 Scaling. However, this document is a proposal from Ethlabs and does not signify the final scope or mainnet schedule for Hegotá.

The Ethereum Foundation announced that FOCIL (EIP-7805) was selected as a key feature of the consensus layer for Hegotá at the checkpoint in April 2026. The official Ethereum roadmap also lists Hegotá as the target upgrade for 2027, marking FOCIL as the consensus layer header.

FOCIL involves a structure where a validator committee creates a list of transactions to be included, which the next block proposer and validators must reflect. It focuses on reducing the issues of certain transactions being excluded or delayed in blocks. The EIP-7805 document indicates that the status of this proposal is in draft form.

Censorship resistance is a matter of a different layer in the technical discussions of Ethereum, beyond simple performance improvements. If certain transactions are excluded during the block creation process, it could undermine the network's neutrality and openness. This context explains why FOCIL has emerged as a central feature of Hegotá.

Another focus presented by Ethlabs is Quick Slots. EIP-8198 proposes changing the currently fixed slot time of 12 seconds to a runtime setting, allowing for a phased approach to reducing slot times. The document is a draft created on March 17, 2026.

Eight seconds is suggested as a baseline in the EIP-8198 document, but the final slot length has not been confirmed. Ethlabs' statement also suggests starting at around 10 seconds while keeping the possibility of further shortening open. What is needed first is to incorporate the infrastructure that allows for changing slot times into the protocol and clients.

Slot shortening also leads to issues with transaction confirmation speed and on-chain price update delays for Korean investors and users. Decentralized exchanges, bridges, and wallet services are directly affected by block generation intervals and confirmation times. However, Quick Slots has not yet been adopted as the official header for Hegotá.

In discussions among Ethereum magicians, there were opinions that infrastructure should be changed first, and target values should be set after performance evaluations. Concerns were raised that a 6-second slot would be burdensome to pursue alongside FOCIL, indicating that network propagation speed and validator equipment requirements need to be reviewed together.

On the account abstraction side, EIP-8141 Frame Transactions is mentioned as a key candidate. This proposal involves processing transaction validation, execution, and gas payment in frame units. The EIP document lists key objectives such as key rotation, batch processing, alternative fee payments, and post-quantum transition paths.

Account abstraction is a technical concept that changes how users handle wallets and transactions. Until now, standard accounts have been largely tied to the combination of private keys and addresses, but with the implementation of account abstraction, signing methods, fee payments, and the bundling of multiple tasks can be designed more flexibly.

However, the Ethereum Foundation summarized that Frame Transactions were not adopted as a header at the April checkpoint due to a lack of consensus on implementation options and remaining complexity issues among client developers. Nevertheless, EIP-8141 is still being treated as a planned inclusion item for the Hegotá upgrade.

The discussions around Hegotá have already entered a phase of scope selection. Earlier reports indicated that core Ethereum developers had begun selecting the scope of Hegotá, with 66 proposals under review. The discussions have since shifted to determining how far speed improvements and changes to the account model can be included in the same upgrade, centering around FOCIL.

The issues viewed by stakeholders also vary. Users and applications can expect faster confirmations and more flexible wallet structures, while client developers and validators bear the burdens of complexity and stability. Changes to L1 require a chain of adjustments across wallets, RPCs, indexers, and validator operating environments.

The core issue of Hegotá is scope rather than direction. The enhancement of censorship resistance is included in the official roadmap, while Quick Slots and Frame Transactions need to confirm implementation difficulties and ecosystem adjustment burdens. The official Ethereum roadmap presents the Hegotá schedule as a target for 2027, noting that the timeline is an estimate and may change.
