North Korea Penetrates US Companies Using IT Personnel from Third Countries

By: cointelegraph.com|2026/09/12 16:19:31

North Korea is infiltrating US companies through remote IT personnel from third countries such as Iran and Lebanon to secure funding for its weapons programs. After interviews, the positions are typically taken over by North Korean personnel. In July, the US government and several foreign agencies issued alerts indicating that North Korean IT personnel are seeking contracts and sending their salaries back to North Korean institutions, posing an internal threat involving data leaks, cryptocurrency theft, and sensitive information breaches. Some third-country IT personnel are recruited via LinkedIn, working part-time as "interview assistants" and earning $500 in cryptocurrency per month. Cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike reports that by 2025, cryptocurrency losses attributed to state-linked North Korean hackers and threat actors will exceed $2 billion, a 51% increase year-on-year. The Bank of Korea estimates that North Korea's GDP will grow by 3.5% in 2025.
