OpenAI, Google, Meta compete for AI domains, crypto firms target .bitcoin and .wallet
OpenAI, Google, and Meta are competing for AI-related internet domains as cryptocurrency firms pursue digital naming rights. Thirteen applicants, including these tech giants, are vying for the .agent domain extension, one of the most contested in the latest expansion of the internet's address system. This competition arose after ICANN revealed 1,615 applications on Oct. 7, marking the first round for new generic top-level domains since 2012. OpenAI applied for 15 extensions, including .agent, .agi, and .gpt. Google is competing for several of the same names, while Meta is pursuing .agent and extensions related to its AI products. Seven applicants seek .agi, and five target .mcp, a standard for connecting AI applications with external tools. Anthropic applied for .anthropic and .claude, leaving .mcp to others. Operating a successful top-level domain registry could allow companies to manage registrations and collect fees, with each application carrying a 227000美元 evaluation fee. The competition has also attracted cryptocurrency firms, with 11 applications for .bit, five for .crypto, and four each for .wallet and .dao. The Cardano Foundation's application for .ada is advancing in ICANN's process, while Frax Finance disclosed an application for .frax. These applications reflect efforts to connect internet addresses with blockchain identities and financial services. However, approval of a crypto-related domain does not automatically enable blockchain transactions.
