Orange Alert for Severe Storms, Hail, and Gusts in the AMBA and Several Provinces
The National Meteorological Service (SMN) has raised the alert level to orange for storms in the Metropolitan Area of Buenos Aires (AMBA), the center and east of the province of Buenos Aires, the south of Entre Ríos, and the southeast of Santa Fe, due to the possibility of locally severe phenomena occurring in the coming hours.
The agency warned that the storms could be accompanied by intense rainfall in short periods, frequent electrical activity, hail, and gusts that could exceed 90 kilometers per hour. In the areas affected by the orange level, accumulations of between 40 and 80 millimeters are estimated, with the possibility of higher records in specific locations.
The moment of greatest instability is expected to concentrate during the night of this Friday and the early hours of Saturday morning, when the advance of a cold front over the central region will favor the formation of more intense storms.
The warning was issued after heavy rainfall was recorded during the morning in the City of Buenos Aires and various points in the suburbs, where two episodes of abundant rain occurred in a few hours, along with gusts close to 50 kilometers per hour.
During the afternoon, the humid environment and instability persisted, with periods of temporary improvement. However, the arrival of the frontal system could cause a rapid deterioration of conditions towards the night.
The SMN warned of intense rainfall, electrical activity, hail, and gusts exceeding 90 kilometers per hour.
Saturday will still begin with storms and a temperature close to 16 degrees, although the rain will lose intensity during the morning as the cold front finishes crossing the region.
After noon, a gradual improvement is expected, with mostly cloudy skies and a low probability of new precipitation. The SMN, however, maintains a yellow alert during the early hours of Saturday due to the possibility of showers and isolated gusts.
For Sunday, a more stable day is anticipated, with no rain and partly cloudy skies. The influx of cold air will also cause a drop in temperature, with a minimum close to 10 degrees and a maximum of around 15.
In addition to the AMBA and the province of Buenos Aires, the orange level includes sectors of the south of Entre Ríos and the southeast of Santa Fe, where strong or severe storms could also be recorded.
In areas of Córdoba, La Pampa, Santiago del Estero, and Corrientes, yellow alerts are in effect for storms of varying intensity, which could include heavy rainfall, electrical activity, gusts, and occasional hail.
The SMN alert system establishes that the orange level corresponds to dangerous meteorological phenomena for society, life, property, and the environment, while the yellow warns of events with the potential for damage and risk of momentary interruption of daily activities.
In light of the possibility of severe phenomena, authorities recommended avoiding unnecessary travel and not circulating through flooded streets. They also urged people to stay in closed buildings and keep away from doors and windows.
Additionally, they advised securing or removing objects that could be blown away by the wind, not taking out the trash, and keeping drains clear. In case water enters a home, the electrical supply should be cut off, and contact with wet cables or appliances should be avoided.
It is also important to have an emergency backpack ready with a flashlight, radio, documents, and a phone, and to follow updates released by official agencies.
