Ripple Donates $300,000 for Flood Relief in Nepal and Tibet
Ripple announced a contribution of $300,000 (approximately 47.95 million yen) as emergency humanitarian aid for the devastating flood damage that occurred near the border of Nepal and the Tibet Autonomous Region of China in late August.
The funds will be sent to two humanitarian organizations, World Central Kitchen and Mercy Corps, with which the company has previously collaborated, to assist in local relief efforts.
Avalanche-Induced Glacier Collapse and Devastating Damage
The current situation is attributed to the collapse of glaciers and avalanches in mountainous areas. A large amount of ice and debris temporarily blocked the Rende-Kora River, forming a natural dam, which later burst, unleashing a violent torrent that engulfed downstream villages and infrastructure.
As rescue efforts continue to face difficulties due to infrastructure destruction and concerns over secondary disasters, the scale of the damage is expanding. The number of dead and missing is significant, with estimates suggesting that over 90,000 residents have been affected. In addition to the loss of roads and bridges, workers at hydropower facilities have also been stranded, prompting Nepalese authorities to call for international cooperation in large-scale recovery support and rescue operations.
Rapid Emergency Support and Local Response in Affected Areas
The two organizations receiving the donations are deploying support leveraging their respective strengths.
World Central Kitchen:
Collaborating with local restaurants, they provide warm meals to isolated disaster areas and rescue teams engaged in emergency response.
Mercy Corps:
They support the provision of safe drinking water and sanitation facilities to prevent the risk of infectious diseases caused by contaminated wells.
Utilizing Technology for Humanitarian Aid and Ripple's Social Contribution
Since 2018, the company has invested significant funds in solving social issues and disaster relief. Beyond this donation, they are also working on building rapid cross-border payment infrastructure using payment solutions such as smart contracts, Ripple Payments, and RLUSD during disasters when traditional banking payments are halted, seeking to enhance the efficiency of humanitarian aid.
Emergency food support and public health preservation efforts continue through both organizations in the affected areas.
