Robinhood CEO Says U.S. Tokenization Market Needs Long-Term Regulatory Framework
Robinhood CEO Vlad Tenev stated that the U.S. tokenization market requires more enduring regulatory rules. During the company's third-quarter earnings call, he pointed out that the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission's (SEC) innovation exemption is a positive step, but the uncertainty of regulatory rules may hinder investors from allocating significant assets to the tokenization market. Tenev emphasized that establishing further rules or passing legislation would help provide long-term regulatory certainty. Robinhood plans to launch private company stock token products overseas; in the U.S., the company is seeking compliant pathways that align with current investor accreditation restrictions. Currently, Robinhood offers about 200 stock tokens backed by underlying stocks, but these products are designed as tokenized debt securities and do not possess the same shareholder rights as traditional stocks, thus failing to meet the SEC's innovation exemption requirements. In the third quarter, the company's cryptocurrency revenue fell 55% year-over-year to $120 million, while nominal cryptocurrency trading volume decreased 38% to $50 billion.
