Romania Enters Stagflation, GDP Grows by 10.8%
Romania has entered a period of stagflation, characterized by declining economic activity and rising prices. The main causes of the crisis include a 2.5% decrease in household consumption and an increase in taxes and energy prices, which could prolong the economic stagnation until the second half of 2027. In the second quarter of 2026, the gross domestic product (GDP) amounted to 494.4 billion lei, which is 10.8% higher than last year; however, this growth is solely attributed to rising prices. The real volume of the economy shrank by 0.4% in gross terms and by 2% when adjusted for seasonal factors. In the first half of the year, real GDP decreased by 0.7%. The largest reductions were observed in wholesale and retail trade (-3.9%), real estate transactions (-4.5%), and industry (-2.9%). Positive dynamics were noted in construction (+12.3%) and agriculture (+3.5%). Inflation in July was 8.2%, down from 10.42% in June. The National Bank of Romania has twice raised its inflation forecast for the end of 2026 from 3.9% to 6.1%. Household consumption fell by 2.5% in the first half of the year, marking the largest decline in a decade. An exit from stagflation is not expected before the second half of 2027.
