The decline of gold could signal further tensions, according to Peter Schiff
Gold, silver, technology stocks, and bitcoin all fell simultaneously on October 30, contrary to the usual behavior of safe-haven assets. For Peter Schiff, this widespread sell-off indicates liquidity tension, but it may also reflect a temporary rush to the dollar in response to margin calls.
In brief
- Gold, silver, Bitcoin, and technology stocks all dropped simultaneously on October 30.
- Peter Schiff believes this widespread decline could reveal liquidity tensions in the markets.
- In response to margin calls, some investors are selling their assets to quickly recover dollars.
- Rising bond yields, persistent inflation, and soaring oil prices are increasing pressure on gold.
- The session on November 2 could help distinguish a temporary correction from a deeper liquidity crisis.
The fall of gold mainly reveals a rush for liquidity
Spot gold lost $141.60, or 3.52%, to return around $3,880 per ounce. Silver fell even more sharply, dropping 6.06% to about $49. Gold futures recorded their lowest close since October 2025.
This movement was surprising, as geopolitical tensions, falling stocks, and the Binance hack would normally have supported precious metals. However, the simultaneous decline of several asset classes suggests that some investors were seeking cash more than a defensive investment.
The figures from the session show the extent of this liquidity need:
- Spot gold lost nearly $150 in one day;
- Silver fell by more than $3;
- The S&P 500 dropped by 1.8%, its worst session since June;
- The Nasdaq Composite fell by 2.9%;
- Intel plunged nearly 29% after disappointing forecasts;
- Bitcoin hit $76,368 after the Binance hack.
When a heavily leveraged stock position declines, the investor may sometimes need to provide new collateral. They may then sell their most liquid assets, including those that have good long-term prospects. In this case, gold becomes a source of liquidity rather than an immediate safe haven.
Peter Schiff believes this correction results from a < < short-term liquidity problem > > that could appear in other markets as soon as the following week.
He therefore presents the decline of metals as a buying opportunity, rather than the end of their bullish cycle. However, this interpretation remains a forecast: a widespread sell-off is not enough to confirm a liquidity crisis.
Oil and rates strengthen preference for the dollar
The demand for liquidity is not the only explanation. Gold is also under pressure from a less favorable monetary environment. The U.S. ten-year rate was around 4.93%, while the Federal Reserve maintained its benchmark rate between 3.75% and 4%.
High bond yields increase the opportunity cost of gold, which pays no interest. Investors can earn a return by holding Treasury bills or cash in dollars, without bearing the volatility of precious metals.
Inflation further complicates the scenario. The core PCE index rose by 3.1% year-on-year in September, while the U.S. economy grew at an annualized rate of 3.4% in the third quarter. These figures leave the Fed with little reason to quickly ease its policy.
West Texas Intermediate oil has also surpassed $104 following an attack on a tanker in the Strait of Hormuz. A prolonged rise in energy prices could reignite consumer prices and strengthen expectations of rate hikes.
This combination (expensive oil, persistent inflation, and high yields) explains why gold may decline despite geopolitical concerns. Investors are not necessarily dismissing its role as a store of value, but they are temporarily favoring an immediately available and yielding dollar.
Bitcoin has faced comparable pressure, exacerbated by the theft of $6.3 billion from Binance. Its decline does not prove that the market equates it to gold. Both assets were simply sold during the same search for liquidity, for partly different reasons.
The Session on November 2 Will Distinguish Between Alert and Forced Sale
Peter Schiff's hypothesis will be tested as soon as the markets reopen on Monday, November 2. A further decline in stocks accompanied by a drop in gold would signal that liquidity needs continue to spread.
Conversely, a stabilization of Wall Street and a rebound in metals would suggest a forced sale limited to a single session. The break of gold below its nearby support of $3,975 may have mechanically accelerated sell orders without signaling a deeper crisis.
Three indicators will help decide: bond yields, the dollar, and margin calls on tech stocks. If rates and the greenback continue to rise, gold could remain under pressure even without a liquidity crisis.
The most important signal is therefore not that gold and bitcoin have fallen together. It lies in the destination of capital. During a shock, investors chose neither the metal nor the crypto, but liquidity in dollars. The duration of this movement will determine whether it is a temporary adjustment or the beginning of broader financial tension.
