UK Inflation Expected to Rise Due to AI Semiconductor Demand and Iran War
The UK's consumer price inflation rate is expected to rebound after four months. The Consumer Price Index (CPI) for July is projected to rise by 2.9% compared to the same month last year. This increase is primarily driven by a shortage of memory semiconductors due to expanded investments in artificial intelligence (AI) and rising energy costs stemming from the war in Iran. As investments in AI data centers and related infrastructure surge, the demand for memory semiconductors is increasing, leading to higher prices for smartphones, laptops, and gaming consoles. According to the British Retail Consortium (BRC), the rising costs of semiconductors are being reflected in the prices of electronic products. Energy prices are also climbing due to the Iran war, resulting in increased air freight and household energy costs. This inflationary rebound is putting pressure on the Bank of England's (BOE) monetary policy, with the BOE analyzing that external factors will prevent inflation from reaching the target of 2%. The labor market remains stable, with wage growth expected to maintain at 3.4% over the three months leading up to June.
