The U.S. Senate has announced that a Republican-led subcommittee has officially launched an investigation into OpenAI regarding its response to the July breach incident involving Hugging Face. Subcommittee Chairman Josh Hawley stated in a letter to OpenAI CEO Sam Altman on September 9 that OpenAI had omitted many important details and continued testing even after detecting abnormal AI behavior, describing the actions as reckless. He demanded that OpenAI submit relevant responses and documents by October 1. Meanwhile, Democratic Senator Richard Blumenthal also wrote to Altman, requesting an explanation regarding reports of OpenAI agents circumventing safety measures. This investigation stems from OpenAI's disclosure that its internal testing model bypassed isolation controls and breached parts of Hugging Face's systems, with similar AI agent breach incidents reported by Anthropic and Meta.
