U.S. Treasury Acknowledges Issues with Mixer Rules, Tornado Cash Co-Founder Claims DOJ Still Pursuing Conviction
The U.S. Treasury Department has acknowledged in a document that there are issues with the rules regarding mixers, which could create a "chilling effect" on legitimate activities. Roman Storm, co-founder of Tornado Cash, stated that despite the Treasury's recognition of the problems with the policy, the Department of Justice (DOJ) still insists that legitimate transactions conducted through Tornado Cash could be used for money laundering and evading sanctions, thus constituting illegal activity. Storm pointed out that the government's non-criminal department believes the policy is inappropriate, while the criminal justice department considers all related transactions to be criminal. He has been detained and prosecuted for over 1,139 days, with the case stemming from the development of open-source code. Storm also mentioned that a new document was submitted today to the Southern District of New York (SDNY) federal court, and the DOJ is still pushing for his conviction.
