U.S. Treasury Sell-off Driven by Changes in Interest Rate Expectations, 10-Year Yield Expected to Drop to 4.25%
Capital Economics analysis suggests that the sell-off in U.S. Treasuries is primarily due to changes in market expectations regarding interest rates. Currently, the 10-year U.S. Treasury yield is approaching its peak from June 2007. Economist James Reilly points out that this trend reflects rising oil prices and a strong U.S. economy, rather than being driven by AI-related bond issuance or fiscal concerns. Reilly expects that as the Federal Reserve's tightening is less than investors anticipated, the 10-year U.S. Treasury yield will fall to 4.25% by the end of 2027. He believes that while AI-related bond issuance will continue to exert upward pressure on yields, its impact will not be as significant as media reports suggest and will be offset by changes in monetary policy expectations. Regarding fiscal concerns, Reilly adds that there have not been any substantial fiscal news recently that would trigger a significant spike in yields.
