Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation Withdraws Support for Blockchain Week 2026
The Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC) has withdrawn its support for Malaysia Blockchain Week 2026. The organizers have removed controversial promotional materials for an afterparty and issued an apology. MDEC and the Malaysian Ministry of Digital Affairs stated that they were not involved in the planning, approval, promotion, or guest selection for the afterparty. According to the event registration page, the official afterparty is set to take place on July 30 at ING Livehouse KL in Kuala Lumpur, with a premium sofa package priced at 1,000 Tether. This issue raises concerns about the management of blockchain events and reputation, although the impact on the number of participants or subsequent sponsorship agreements has not been confirmed. During the same period, Hong Kong experienced romance scams related to virtual asset investments, with 25 reported incidents between July 24 and 30, totaling losses of $9 million. One victim, an insurance planner, lost $3.3 million to a fake virtual asset investment app. According to Hong Kong police, there were 43,212 reported fraud cases in 2025, with losses amounting to approximately HK$8.1 billion. Online investment scams increased by 30.7% year-on-year, with losses related to virtual assets reaching HK$1.18 billion.
