Norway Arrests Russian Vessel at Naftogaz's Request Over $4.22 Billion Debt
In Norway, at the request of the Naftogaz Group, the Russian vessel "Professor Molchanov" has been arrested. The arrest is aimed at enforcing an international arbitration ruling to recover compensation from Russia for seized assets in annexed Crimea. The District Court of Norrtroms and Senja made the decision on August 31, 2026. The arrest will secure the payment of approximately $4.22 billion in compensation, including interest and legal costs for the unlawful expropriation of the Group's assets on the peninsula. The vessel "Professor Molchanov," owned by Russia and used for commercial expedition voyages, is not allowed to leave the port of Barentsburg on the Svalbard archipelago. Acting Chairman of Naftogaz Sergey Fedorenko noted that the company views this step as crucial for restoring justice and plans to continue the search for Russian assets in various jurisdictions until the debt is fully repaid.
