Six AI Companies Sign White House Audit Agreement, Flaws Exist in Self-Selected Auditors
Nvidia, OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, Meta, and xAI signed a critical agreement on frontier AI with the White House on September 29. The agreement has key flaws, as it does not specify who selects the auditors, what can be reviewed, whether conclusions are made public, and lacks penalties for non-compliance. In practice, each company chooses its own auditors and determines the scope of the review. Samuel Vance-Law, research director at the Decentralization Research Center, pointed out that the case of Enron hiring Arthur Andersen in 2000 led to the Sarbanes-Oxley Act. He mentioned that the average compliance rate for 16 companies with the White House's voluntary commitments in 2023 was only 53%, with 8 of them scoring zero in assisting external error checks. Vance-Law argued that auditors should be able to independently choose the testing content, companies should disclose the auditors and the scope of the review, and oversight should be conducted by an independent entity.
