U.S. Imposes 50% Tariff on $20 Billion Canadian Goods, Canada Promises Retaliation
On the 22nd, the United States implemented a 50% tariff on approximately $20 billion worth of Canadian goods. Canada announced that it would impose a similar retaliatory tariff starting September 8. The trade conflict between the two countries has intensified due to the breakdown of negotiations. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney criticized the U.S. for presenting conditions that infringe on Canada's trade autonomy and sovereignty during the negotiations. This tariff is based on Section 338 of the Tariff Act of 1930, which the U.S. described as a measure to offset discriminatory treatment. Canada plans to focus its retaliatory tariffs on a variety of items, including steel, dairy products, home appliances, and agricultural machinery. According to the Associated Press, the 50% tariff targets goods that account for about 5% of Canada's annual exports to the U.S., including hockey equipment, agricultural products, and cement. A poll indicated that 91% of respondents were aware of the tariff news, and 70% believed it would negatively impact the local economy. Opinions on how to respond were divided among retaliatory tariffs, further negotiations, and concessions. Ontario Premier Doug Ford supported Prime Minister Carney's decision and urged for a strong response.
