US Resumes Beef Imports from Mexico, Ground Beef Price at $6.89
The U.S. government has gradually resumed beef imports from Mexico starting August 24. The average price of ground beef in July was $6.89 per pound, a 9.0% increase compared to the previous year. The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) announced that it would reopen the southern livestock corridor on the condition that Mexico complies with the joint action plan. The first reopening point is the Douglas corridor in Arizona, followed by a review of the Santa Teresa and Columbus corridors in New Mexico. All imported animals will undergo USDA inspections, and the imports may be suspended again if risks increase. This measure aims to simultaneously prevent the spread of New World screw-worms and alleviate the burden of beef prices in the U.S. Mexico accounts for about 3% of U.S. beef supply, and imports of livestock from Mexico have been restricted since 2025. The industry generally assesses that the resumption of imports will not have an immediate impact on prices. The Mexican government is strengthening biosecurity measures, and President Trump has stated that he will import up to 300,000 metric tons of ground beef tariff-free for 90 days.
