Morgan Stanley Sees Emerging Market Buying Opportunities Despite Yen Strength

The Japanese yen surged to around 152 yen per dollar, but Morgan Stanley forecasts that the yen's strength will not significantly impact investment flows into emerging market assets. The firm's strategy team analyzed that if global financial market volatility remains low, carry trades in high-yield emerging market currencies can withstand the yen's rebound. Carry trade is a strategy that involves borrowing in a currency with low interest rates to invest in assets with higher interest rates. While there are concerns that the yen's strength could lead investors to sell emerging market assets, Morgan Stanley emphasized that global growth and stock market performance are more critical variables. In fact, while some emerging market currencies have weakened against the yen, they have shown strength against the dollar. The yen briefly rose to 152.89 per dollar on the 8th, buoyed by expectations of further interest rate hikes from the Bank of Japan. Morgan Stanley maintains a positive outlook on emerging market assets and recommends a buying strategy during corrections.
