MIT Study Warns of Extreme Gaps in Food, Water, and Energy by 2050
**A modeling study from MIT warns that access to food, water, and energy could diverge drastically depending on the region and income level by 2050. In some scenarios, the poorest households in Africa could spend nearly half of their income on food, while other populations would face particularly severe energy pressures.

Access to basic resources could become much more unequal by 2050, even within the same region and among people subjected to different economic conditions. A study co-authored by researchers from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) projects that lower-income households could face a food burden close to half of their income, while wealthier groups would allocate a much smaller fraction to the same need.
The research does not attempt to choose a single probable future but rather shows how different combinations of economic growth, climate, trade, land use, and consumption can alter the security of food, water, and energy. Its results provide policymakers with a map of vulnerabilities, with a central warning: regional averages may hide extreme problems among the poorest populations.
A Gap That Widens by Income
The most striking scenario appears in Southern Africa, where the poorest 10% of the population by income could allocate 49.6% of their resources to buying food by 2050. In contrast, the richest 10% in the same region would dedicate only 5.5%, a difference that drastically reduces the money available for housing, health, education, and other essential needs.
West Africa and East Africa also show high food burdens for lower-income households, with projections of 48.4% and 42.5%, respectively. The magnitude of these figures matters because any increase in food prices can leave vulnerable families with very little margin to absorb other basic expenses.
Comparing with 2015 helps to gauge the uncertainty of change. For the lower-income group in West Africa, the model estimated a food burden close to 25% of income in 2015, but by 2050, the evaluated scenarios range approximately from 20% to 75%.
In Southern Africa, that same group would have allocated around 20% of their income to food in 2015, while simulations for 2050 place the burden between 25% and 65%. The range does not represent a single prediction but rather the result of exploring possible futures under different economic, environmental, and consumption assumptions.
Energy Pressure Is Not Equally Distributed Either
The projected inequality is not limited to food, as residential energy costs could also weigh much more heavily on poor households. In some parts of the Middle East, the estimated energy burden for 2050 reaches 18.9% of income in the lowest income bracket, compared to only 1.7% in the highest income bracket.
Eastern Europe presents another relevant difference between economic groups, with an energy burden of up to 11.3% for lower-income households. For the upper bracket, however, the model places that burden below 5%, illustrating how the same variation in costs can produce very different consequences depending on the ability to pay.
In regional terms, food insecurity appears as a particularly acute concern in parts of sub-Saharan Africa. Energy security may be more critical for low-income residents in certain areas of Asia, Eastern Europe, and the Middle East, although research also finds considerable differences within each region.
Gi Joo Kim, a research scientist at Tulane University and co-author of the work, stated that regional averages can make risks seem more manageable than they really are. According to his explanation, stopping the analysis at an average figure may leave out precisely those populations most exposed to future changes.
A Model with Thousands of Possible Futures
The team employed version 7.1 of the Global Change Analysis Model, known as GCAM, a framework that represents the interactions between energy, economies, water, land, and climate. The system divides the world into 32 regions, 235 watersheds, and 384 land use regions, in addition to incorporating estimates about the evolution of commodity prices.
The modeling included 12 key variables related to resource availability. Among them are population, gross domestic product, income distribution, carbon intensity, land use, agricultural trade, various energy consumption scenarios, and multiple projections on water use.
With this structure, the researchers ran simulations for 3,735 different scenarios and observed the range of possible outcomes for 2050. The purpose was to identify the conditions that produce different levels of resource security, rather than presenting a single estimate as if it were the inevitable future.
The article, published on September 8, 2026, in the journal Earth's Future, was prepared by Jennifer Morris and Gi Joo Kim along with Brian O'Neill and Marshall Wise from the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory; John Weyant from Stanford University; and Jonathan Lamontagne from Tufts University. The research received partial support from the U.S. Department of Energy, Stanford, and the National Research Foundation of Korea.
What It Means for Public Policy
Jennifer Morris, a principal research scientist at the MIT Center for Sustainability Science and Strategy and the MIT Energy Initiative, noted that spending half of income on food can be destabilizing for a family's life. This burden leaves few resources for other critical needs and makes household well-being more sensitive to any shocks in prices, employment, or availability.
The study also questions analyses that seek a single driver of food, energy, and water insecurity. Kim explained that income is important, but that regional conditions, land use, energy systems, water availability, and consumer behavior jointly shape the risks.
For policymakers, this conclusion implies that it would not be sufficient to apply a uniform measure across all regions. Strategies would need to respond to specific combinations of factors, as one area may need to prioritize food and agricultural trade, while another requires protecting energy access or managing water more carefully.
The research arises from an effort to fill a gap in resource security modeling, which often uses a limited set of shared socioeconomic trajectories. By incorporating differentiated outcomes by income and regions, the approach seeks to provide a perspective closer to human well-being and guide subsequent studies on specific territories or risks.
The MIT publication warns that uncertainty does not disappear when using complex models, but argues that making it visible improves planning. By 2050, the challenge will not only be to produce more food, energy, or water, but to ensure that the cost of accessing them does not disproportionately fall on those with lower incomes.
