Sanctions Bill Against Russia Faces Risk of Failure in the House of Representatives
The sanctions bill against Russia's trading partners, passed by the U.S. Senate, may not make it through the House of Representatives due to resistance from Democrats and a lack of support from Republicans. Republicans did not include the bill in the agenda for this week, and leading party members do not consider it a priority. House Speaker Mike Johnson noted that passing the bill will be challenging. Supporters argue that it will give the White House new tools to pressure Russia in the context of the war in Ukraine. However, Republicans are divided on the issue of intervention in the conflict, and some Democrats are concerned about granting President Trump additional powers. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries expressed serious concerns about potential abuse of power. Some Republicans insist on passing the bill before the end of the election session. Earlier, one of the bill's authors, Senator Richard Blumenthal, had stated that it would be passed in September. On August 7, the U.S. Senate supported the sanctions bill against Russia and Iran, which includes the possibility of imposing 100% secondary tariffs on countries purchasing Russian oil and gas.
